    Goodbye, 2020

Don’t call us…. we’ll call you. Well, 2020… can’t say we are sad to see you go. Let us start off by saying how proud we are of all of you. You’re here. You made it through a year of uncertainty, fear and immeasurable loss. A year when our mental health was forced to take a backseat to our physical well-being and we were introduced to terms like ‘social distancing’ and ‘anti-masker’. But, we hope that in the middle of all the unprecedented chaos, you were able to find a little light. We hope that quarantine gave you the opportunity to slow down; to catch up on your favorite show…

I’m a Strong and Independent Woman

When I was growing up, my household was anything but the typical 1950’s sitcom, where the husband was the bread winner and the wife was the home maker. In fact, my mom has always been career-driven for as long as I can remember and I’ve admired her for it ever since. She identifies as a working woman, and is very passionate about what she does. Throughout elementary school, high school, university, and now into graduate school – I’ve noticed I’m a lot more like her than I initially thought as I am also very passionate about my work, my education, and consistently crave being challenged. I’ve promised myself that no…

3 Advantages of Being Married to a Quadriplegic

Guest Blogger: Stephanie Atkins Hi, I’m Stephanie. I initially met my husband Ryan when we were 8 years old in the same second-grade class but did not see him again until many years later when we were 21. I was in massage school at the time of Ryan’s car accident when he sustained a C3/C4 SCI. Hearing of his accident through a mutual friend, I pushed through my insecurities and reached out to offer him a massage on the heels of his four month hospital stay. It turned out to be the best decision of my life. We quickly developed a friendship and began dating several years later. In the…

    Travel: Then and Now

Travelling for us was always an escape from reality; a time to recharge. We could leave our responsibilities behind us and explore new places or return to our favourite vacation spots. There was always some pre-planning required, but the effort was as minimal or as detailed as we chose it to be. The biggest obstacle was lining up our work calendars to match up our vacation days. After that, it was pretty much smooth sailing. Like anyone else, we expected and experienced minor issues such like flight delays, getting through on connecting flights on time and the possibility of bad weather that could hinder some of our plans. We travelled…

    A New Normal

A look back on our first year Chelsea here – I met Colleen in the summer of 2019. Her husband, a respiratory therapist and avid outdoorsman, was injured in a hunting accident on April 18th, 2019. My hands were shaking as I clumsily dialed their phone number to 1) introduce myself and 2) to ask them to be the subject of my next film. The team and I wanted to document a first time wheelchair user and their first year rolling into this new life. After a few years in documentary filmmaking I have learned one important thing, if you are nervous as hell to talk to someone, ask them…

    Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month

Welcome to September, SCI Awareness month! This month, all our posts will have to do with raising awareness for people with spinal cord injuries and wheelchair users. I think awareness comes in different forms for everybody and it depends on who you talk to. For me, this blog post is difficult to write, not because the topic is a difficult subject matter, but because YOU, the reader of Wheel Love, are probably already aware. You know the challenges, the hurdles and the constant stereotyping of someone with a disability. So personally, I feel SCI Awareness month isn’t writing to you about what you need to know, it’s about how you…
